We have received a good number of emails from students asking for best tips and tricks for cracking the RC section in Verbal. In every competition exam RC plays a vital role for deciding cutoffs. It is therefore imperative that you master the art of reading.
Find below the techniques advised by expertmasterji. Following these techniques would help you to master reading comprehension and easily clear the verbal cutoff, Although we dont have a magic wand, and our techniques show result only after regular practise and regular implementation.
# Trick 1 :-
Read slowly :- You would find good number of websites suggesting skimming and fast reading techniques but trust you me no matter how much you practice these techniques they land you in a fuss on the examination day because the exam temperament takes a toll over your intellect on the D-Day.
So read slowly and stop after each paragraph. Then analyse the tone and the jist of the para and how the author is trying to connect this para with the paras earlier to this one.
# Trick 2 :-
Learn all the synonyms for different possible tones :- 1 out of every 5 questions asked for RC tests your comprehension of tones. If you learn all the different possible tones from here., I believe you will master at least one question of RC.
# Trick 3 :-
Its not what you read or how much you read, its about your approach to reading :- Well reading more does help certainly as it helps in contextual vocabulary building but more than how much you read; what matters is your approach to reading and ideally it should be
> Read the paragraph and draft your own details. Create a mind map of details mentioned in your own language. This is very helpful as it keeps you with the flow and your mind creates a better understanding of the passage.
# Trick 4 :-
Take notes :- If you are really disappointed by your scoring in the RC portion that this trick is definitely for you. Use this trick for another 20 passages you attempt and then your mind will itself start working in that direction. All you have to dos is make a note of all the important points you come across in the passage. and then try attempting the questions from there on. This would really improve your verbal score.
# Trick 5 :-
When to read the questions :- Well some students prefer reading the questions first-hand and then read the passage and some practice the other way around but we suggest you read the first paragraph first and then read the questions and then get back to the passage. The first paragraph would give you an understanding whether you would be able to decode the passage or not. Also it helps you to get some understanding of what is in the offering further.
When you read the questions first than your mind tries to take a care of the questions to approach, and this inturn helps you to take lesser time to attempt the question than you would take otherwise.
Have a happy RC hunting. If you have any query or doubt please post in the comments section.
