Grammer Tips for CAT :-

Question 1:- The mayor along with his brothers ___ going to jail.
1> is
2> are

Answer is : option 1.

Explanation :- Now an obvious question would be why are we not using are whereas the phrase seems compounded. but the tip here is that the phrase introduced by as well as or along with will modify the earlier word (mayor in this case), but it does not compound the subjects (as the word and would do). and hence we use is.

Question 2 :- The mayor and his brothers ___ going to jail.

1> is
2> are

Answer is : option 2.

Explanation :- Unlike Question 1 where we used 'as well as; to modify ;and compounds the subjects and hence we use are here.

Question 3 :- Everyone ___ submitted his or her assignment.
1> has
2> have

Answer is : option 1.

Explanation :- anyone, everyone, someone, no one, nobody are always singular when used alone and, therefore, require singular verbs. Similarly we use: Someone has left his mobile phone.

Question 4 :- Either my father or my brothers ___ going to sell the house
 1> are
 2> is

Answer is : option 1.

Explanation : - Before we answer this question I suggest we first check Question 5.

Question 5 :- Neither my brothers nor my father ___ going to sell the house.
 1> are
 2> is

Answer is option 2.

Explanation :- The conjunction 'or' does not compounds (as and does): when nor or or is used it is the subject proximity which desides whethere the verb is going to be singular or plural. As in case of Question number 4 we find that verb is in close proximity to brothers and so we use plural verb 'are' similarly in question 5 verb is in close proximity to father and hence we use singular verb 'is'.
